At his base in Carrigtwohill, in county Cork, Terence O’Brien is continuing on a strong family tradition; working with the thoroughbred has been a custom amongst the O’Brien clan for over 100 years. In fact, the colours worn by O’Brien’s horses today are the same as those sported by his great grandfather’s runners back in the early 1900’s.
Having entered the training ranks on a full-time basis in 2008, Terence has since developed his Woodstock yard into a state-of-the-art facility. Features at the yard include well-ventilated barns, two horse walkers, two grass gallops, a hill gallop, a level gallop, a schooling strip, a three-furlong sand gallop, and a four-furlong uphill sand gallop. Heart monitors and trackers also feature in the daily training regime at Woodstock, and those latest additions are proving to be hugely significant, with more information now available after a horse’s work routine.
With the support of his hard-working team, Terence has saddled more than 100 career winners. His horses have been victorious at the prestigious Irish racing festivals, including those held at Fairyhouse, Galway, Killarney, Listowel and Punchestown. There have also been high-profile placed finishes in the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham and in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. Leading performers for the east Cork operation include Articulum, Ballyadam Approach, Ballyadam Brook, Buster Dan Dan, Consharon Boy, Farrells Fancy, Glenquest, Lakemilan, Our Roxanne, She’s Got Grit and Viaduct Joey. In 2020, the stable broke its record for prize money accumulated in a season.
